The Sardinian DietThe Sardinian diet is primarily made up of plant-based foods which we know are very good for us. Couple that with a lot of physical activity and you won't be surprised to learn that many people live to be 100 years old. Sardinia is home to sheepherders who tend to walk at least 5 miles every day, helping them to stay fit and active. The women who call Sardinia their home also stay fit and active and are cared for by their family as they age, ensuring that they live to a ripe old age too.
What to Eat in SardiniaIf you would like to stay as healthy as the locals why not try a few of the dishes that are lovingly created in the area? Let's take a look at just a few of the local delicacies that you're sure to enjoy:
Pasta dishes are very popular in Sardinia, just as they are throughout Italy. With North-African influences and a desire to create some tempting dishes, the locals like to dine on fregula, which is similar to couscous and is made from ground semolina. Added to soups and traditional dishes, fregula is well worth a try.
Fish is a staple in Sardinia thanks to the fact that it's an island. You will no doubt find that there are a lot of fish dishes on any menu, thanks to the freshness of the fish and the skill of those who prepare it. Why not sample some Mullet bottarga which has a delicate flavour and is served sliced or grated but always raw on a bit of bread.
Cheese, whether it comes from a sheep or a goat is Sardinia's main export. There are many different types of cheese produced on the island and cheese lovers are guaranteed to enjoy choosing from the wide range. Why not give the ricotta a try or the capra sarda? Both are exceptionally good, and will leave you wanting more!
In addition to being a fantastic tourist destination, Sardinia is home to some delicious dishes and very healthy people. If you would like to sample nothing more than some tasty meals made by some of the world's healthiest people you need to head to Sardinia.
Don't forget to take a few photographs of your meals so you can show your friends and remind yourself of some of the best dishes you've ever
